The largest vacuum compressor for ELI Beamlines

On 1 November, we delivered to the ELI Beamlines research centre a vacuum compressor of PW (petawatt) laser pulses which will be part of the L3 laser – one of four lasers that the research centre will be using. It is the largest vacuum opto-mechanical unit ever designed and constructed in the Czech Republic.

This compressor was developed by Delong Instruments company in cooperation with the scientists from the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The final design of the compressor, its construction and testing was carried out by Delong Instruments between January 2016 and the summer of 2017.

The L3 laser system, part of which is the vacuum compressor, will be a petawatt laser system with the highest average power output in the world. The pulse laser diodes developed specially for this laser are the most powerful in the world as well. The L3 also has the largest opto-mechanical vacuum structure ever designed and constructed in the Czech Republic.
